Who Is the Girl From the Blue Moon Beer Commercial
Starring in commercial hardly a 'Blue Moon' event for Actress Dominique Bela
For Dominique Bela, acting is about stepping into a completely alternative universe, where no idea is too wild, and the singular goal is to entertain. When she steps in front of the camera, she can dive deep into a scene and create a little bit of magic through her work. Whether playing a comedic character or entering a dystopian world full of drama, Bela knows just how to captivate an audience.
With a focus on film, television and commercials, Bela has made a formidable name for herself in her home country of New Zealand and abroad. She has starred in celebrated films such as Contrary, acclaimed TV shows like The Making of the Mob: Chicago, and national commercial campaigns for recognizable brands, including SharkNinja, Credit Karma, and most recently, Blue Moon Beer.
Working on the Blue Moon Beer commercial was an amazing experience for Bela, who was eager to take part in a beer campaign targeted towards women. As a beer lover herself, Bela knows that too often beer commercials are designed for a male audience, and this was a fresh take. On top of this, one of Bela's old side jobs was working in a craft beer hall, where she had to take multiple tests to become certified in beer. She is extremely knowledgeable about the product and enjoys Blue Moon. Taking the lead in the commercial was therefore a "no brainer" for the actress, as she puts it.
"The story is simple and clear that Blue Moon Beer is part of an extraordinary life. I found out from the clients that the main consumers of Blue Moon Beer are women, which I think is the best. It's so unusual for a woman to be the hero of a beer commercial, even if you are a lead, you're probably still the girlfriend or friend or accomplice. This is a great wheat beer for ladies and I'm all for it. It's also delicious," said Bela.
The commercial features Bela walking around a city that is experiencing rare events that would only happen "once in a blue moon" as the expression dictates. It asks the question, what would happen if "once in a blue moon" became routine? We'd spend more days waking up to rainbows on a cloudy day, feeding bald eagles in the park and curing all diseases. Blue Moon wants you to crack open a beer and experience the extraordinary more often. Bela is featured in every shot and makes for an endearing protagonist.
"It was such an amazing experience. I was able to see Toronto, where the commercial was shot, from heights and angles I had never witnessed before. We got to shoot in very iconic locations. It was a wonderful team. I got to pretend to sleep, have a morning commute, present in a boardroom — which is actually really fun, experiencing someone else's reality," she said.
The commercial aired in August in the United States and is still being shown across the country on many major networks. For Bela, the success of the commercial has been exhilarating, as friends from around the world are seeing her face on their television screens once again.
"I had a high school friend from New Zealand who was visiting the states text me and say she had just seen the Blue Moon Beer commercial. It was very cool replying 'yes, that was me!' It's one thing for actors to recognize you, we're always looking for friends, but it's another thing for an old friend who hardly has an idea of what you're doing in Toronto recognize you," she said. "My mom doesn't even recognize me on TV half the time."
